We get a lot of enquiries about “wide screen”, and a few words of explanation are perhaps in order. Wide screen displays a picture on a rectangular area which is 16 units wide for each 9 units high, for example 32” x 18”, hence 16:9. This compares to the older display ratio of 4:3, which gave a squarer looking image.

What is crucial is that the technology is exactly the same for both systems, and you do not need a wide-screen TV to view a wide-screen programme. The only time you need a different TV is for High Definition (BluRay) discs. We are not going down that road for some time yet.

If you play a wide-screen disc on a standard format screen then either you will lose a small amount of picture at the extreme left and right, or, you will see the full picture, but there will be a black band above and below the picture. Depending on your set, you may be able to chose which alternative you prefer.

The Payments Council, which is the organisation that represents the banks in all settlement matters, has back-tracked on it’s earlier decision, and decided to keep cheques in use for the foreseeable future. However, the Cheque Guarantee Card scheme remains suspended. We will continue to accept cheques for mail order dealings, but cannot accept them at our Rally Sales Stall.

Todays Buses No.40 - Worcestershire is now completed and ready for despatch. Most of the County is former Midland Red territory, and there is a strong showing by First Midland Red West. There is also plenty of independent activity, although this has reduced in recent years. Whittle, Diamond, Astons and LMS all make an appearance, plus the County Councils own “Woosh” branded modern fleet.
